It started at the beginning of the week.
I noticed an animal had nibbled on my not-yet-bloomed tulips.
A couple bulbs had been pulled up as well.
So, I quickly got onto the most resourceful site - FACEBOOK! and asked my friends what was up with my tulips getting eaten.
The majority said it was probably deer.
We live by the Jordan River and 2 lakes and so I've seen deer around our neighborhood. My neighbor saw 4 or 5 deer on our street this week too.
Anyways... I got lots of tips on keeping the deer away.
And then I was busy being a mother and instead of doing anything about the deer problem, I hoped bambi and his mother would stay away from my tulips.
We had a wind storm. A crazy wind storm.
Then it snowed and I forgot about my tulips.
Then it slightly warmed up.
The next night, the entire herd of deer must have come to graze on my tulips for all but 18 were chewed to bits. The 18 that survived happened to be guarded by a huge tumbleweed (which I'm sure the deer were frightened of). I hope the other 31 tulips filled up their tummies.
I mourned my lost tulips. I just wanted lovely flowers in my front yard. I even planted those bulbs 2 days before Truman was born with my huge pregnant belly, because I wanted those flowers so much. sigh...
So yesterday I put some sliced grapefruit out (I heard grapefruit helps keeps deer away.).
Seeing my flower bed this morning with brightly colored grapefruit was almost as pleasant as seeing tulips... almost.
So ... now I am making my plans to go to Temple Square and the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point to get my yearly delight from glorious Tulips.
But next year... oh, next year.... DEER, don't even think about coming into my yard. I'm going to be prepared with lots of deer repellent.
THE END.

Ha, ha! I love the grapefruit look, too. And you look lovely at the tulip garden last year!
Heather, I feel your pain. I have the same problem. And spring flowers, especially tulips are my FAVORITE! We have put up some fencing, because I am determined to see tulips in my yard this year. I'm so sad for you. I've never heard of the grapefruit idea, but I will try it. Good luck next year!
Oh I am so sorry! Dang animals. I feel that way every year with squirrels and my garden. They always manage to ruin something. Nice grapefruit! :)
