ABC & 123

In an effort to be involved with Abe's education, I decided I need to buckle down and make sure he's ready for kindergarten this fall.

I decided we'd start by making sure he knows how to write all the letters of the alphabet and know the sounds of each letter. Basic, but important.

I'm creating a bulletin board of things we're attempting to teach each day.  {This booklet of letters in 4x6 size} is part of that. I'm hoping to do a letter a week or speed it up as needed.  They are simple but hopefully will help with letter recognition and will remind me to work on it with Abe.

I also love these Big Alpha letter sheets that I blogged about before.  I like that they are huge so the little ones who lack the fine motor skills don't have to write tinsy-tiny.

And if anyone is interested, this is a video of the Alphabet chant that Hannah learned at school which teaches the sounds for each letter.  It appears as though she had a few hairs to fix and itches to scratch during the taping.

If you have any ideas of teaching letters or sounds or reading - especially to make it fun for a wiggly boy, please share.

One thing we did in the car tonight: I would say a letter and then we would all take turns saying a word that started with that letter. I guess games are a fun way to go with kids. But I'm not always that creative to think of games (or patient enough) - so let me know if you've come up with some that work.

My kids like to watch "The Letter Factory" (a DVD put out by Leapfrog).

Marissa is also really in to typing on the computer. She does the exercises on this website- http://www.davis.k12.ut.us/cjh/appliedtech/Business/Keyboarding/

I think it's really great for letter recognition.

I think playing games like that is exactly what they need. I have found that as Weston has been learning, and Aidan is around with us as we do homework etc, Aidan is learning a bunch. He can alredady write his name, and I didn't really teach him, it is just that Weston has been doing it, and so Aidan caught on. Whenever we do Kindergarten homework, Aidan does it with us. And we play games in the car CONSTANTLY.

"The amazing action alphabet" www.seeheardocompany.com , has a cd with little songs for each of the letters. It is similar to the letter factory, but I love that it is a cd we can listen to in the car. My kids love it, and even though I've heard it hundreds of times (almost quite literally) I still don't mind listening to it again.
