"We Read to Know we are not alone." C.S. Lewis

I hadn't really thought about reading chapter books with my kids at this age until Brittany mentioned that her boys have really enjoyed them. So, I thought I'd give it a try and see how the kids liked it.

I had a bunch of these Great Illustrated Classics printed by Baronet which are easy-to-read abridgements of the original novels. I found them for $2.99 at Deseret Book (recently) & I think Michaels (long ago).

Hannah picked Heidi first and we just finished it tonight. Hannah really enjoyed and sat very still and could pay attention. Abe wiggled a bit but sat there through the entire book of 22 chapters. I sometimes explained to him what was happening. It probably took us a month though we didn't read every day and some days we read more than one chapter.

I like these series of books because they are large print and they have a picture on almost every page. Someday when the kids learn how to read, I think these will be great for them - especially to introduce them to great classics. The pictures are black and white which my kids weren't thrilled about, but I think they helped them stay a bit more focused nonetheless.

I think this will be a great evening activity for me and the kids. I want to read some more of these Illustrated Classics, but also Stuart Little 1 & 2, Mouse and the Motorcyle, Charlotte's Web, and Little House on the Prairie.

What are other chapter books that little ones would enjoy? Please share!

"A love of books, of holding a book, turning its pages, looking at its pictures, and living its fascinating stories goes hand-in-hand with a love of learning." Laura Bush

Embarrassingly enough...no, I have not done this with my kids. I need to start!

hey, of course you can read the posts where people gave a bunch of good ideas for me, but another that my mom just gave me (that was actually mine when I was a kid) is The Trumpet of the Swan (another E. B. White). I am very excited to read this to Weston, and will probably do it before I start the little house books.

It is a little long, but Alyssa was pretty fascinated by Don Quixote. She just loved the part where he picked a fight with the windmill. It is a classic. Really the original modern novel.

We also just finished Death of a Salesman with her. Not as big a hit with the two-year-old as you might think.

Amazing times with the kids and reading! It is the best thing! It sounds like you are off to a great start with the classics. We loved the Little House books (we read Farmer Boy one summer when I thought my boys would be too old, but they came for every chapter!).
