Baby Steps

I know I keep mentioning my efforts to clean and tidy... and it's all because I am going crazy trying to figure out how to find energy to organize my family and house. I realize I have 2 kids under the age of 4 which makes for messes upon messes even after cleaning up messes. But I also have this vision of what my more peaceful organized life could be. I'm super nervous about baby #3 coming and what it will do to the level of chaos at home. So I'm quite determined to buckle down and organize myself...prepare every needful thing...establish a house of order...so we can have a house of peace...of love...of the Spirit. (D&C 88:119)

So today I took some Baby Steps (learning from Bob's example) and swooshed through my drawers and closet. Hannah helped sort and fold and toss until we filled 2 big boxes. I had another box of books/old toys/vhs tapes so we took them all to Goodwill. What a relief! Can I just say that I really, really don't miss anything I donated. Really! Then I boxed up all my normal lady clothes that don't fit this pregnant mama. And hung my few maternity clothes so now when Miss Hannah decides to select an outfit for me, it might actually fit. Perhaps now I can go in my closet without rolling my eyes, gasping, and quickly shutting the door due to chaos.

My main goal is to be able to go anywhere (even closets) in my house and not feel overwhelmed by the work I need to do. Once I rid myself of half of my house of collected stuff, I feel like the weekly chores won't seem so odious. So once my kids start preschool in 2 weeks, I'm coming up with a plan, dedicating myself to sorting and tossing, and hopefully seeing some progress so I won't go crazy for real. Has anyone read a great organizing book for ideas. I wondered if this one was good "Organizing from the Inside Out: The Foolproof System For Organizing Your Home, Your Office and Your Life by Julie Morgenstern".

And last of all, tonight when I was having Hannah help vacuum the kitchen, she said, "When I grow up to be a mom, I'm going to do just what you do: have my kids work...(and I thought - oh nice work ethic I'm teaching ... until she added)... while I sit down and do nothing." Never fear, I made sure she realized if anyone was Cinderella around here, it was the mom who just finished an hour and a half of dinner and dishes. Sigh... a mother's work is never done......

On paper, that might seem like a great idea for a comfortable chair, but have you actually tried sitting on it yet? Back to the drawing board.

Good job organizing. It is a pain, but feels good when it is done. We donated so much stuff when we moved out it felt great. Hannah's comment about having her kids work when she is a mom is hilarious. Kids don't understand all the hard work mom's do each day for them. Being a mom is not easy, but worth it. Also, I'm sure you will be just fine when you have your 3rd baby. You have two little helpers to help you.

oh, heath, there is nothing worse than having your kids comment on how "little" you do around the house. Aaargh!! On Saturday Christian was angry that he had to unload the dishwasher (a job that just rotates through the boys so this shouldn't have come as a surprise). So he lashed out and said, "Why don't you ever work around here and do the dishwasher?" Nothing gets my blood boiling like being underappreciated (not to mention that I had made meals, did the laundry, vaccumed, mopped, and picked up the house ALL day long). Phew!! I guess we truly won't be appreciated until our kids have kids of their own. So I guess all we can do is smile and document all of the silly things they say. I love you friend.

We figure that the mom does 28 big jobs for every small job the kids do. It's not a proven fact, just probably a good estimate :)

I LOVE your organizing ideas. Fly lady and I must get to work here!
