Last night we watched part of the 1st Lord of the Rings movie. This is one of my favorite quotes. For those you haven't seen it, Frodo is the hobbit whose task is to take the 'ring' to the 'mountain of doom' to be destroyed because it was forged by evil men and destroying it will save mankind (ummm...kindof a noncomplete summary) anyhoo...And Gandalf is a wise wizard who helps along the way.
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.
I won't bore anyone with all my thoughts on this, but I love that he emphasizes our CHOICE. Our choice to spend our time wisely here on earth...to make righteous choices which will bring happiness. Our choice to shun wickedness surrounding us and to seek LIGHT and goodness and truth. And then I love that he ends with an encouraging thought which reminds me that Heavenly Father is continually watching over us. And though sometimes we are given challenges, he blesses and strengthens us to endure to the end. There is always HOPE!
