We Believe

Today I read a review of a young-children's book series by a Christian Homeschooling Mama. She voiced the reason she didn't want her children reading that series of books - based on the storyline including disrespect for adults and lack of consequence for children lying and stealing.

Anyhoo... she was hammered by librarians and parents for her review. I was talking with Jimmy about it because I thought it curious that they were so upset. Mostly they seemed to want to find any reason to slam homeschooling but also were outraged that this mom was denying children access to certain books.

Her defense: "As a parent, I am responsible for what my children read. And I will deny access to any books I feel are inappropriate for whatever reason. They are not little adults, and should not be allowed to come and go as they please. Children need boundaries set out for them and slowly we will remove the boundaries as they can discern right and wrong for themselves." guinever

This does provide for an interesting discussion...
But really my point is not about this woman or her parenting philosophy.
This just fueled my thoughts on what I think is appropriate in media, books, music, etc... and if I teach my children these things.

Jimmy reminded me of The 13th Article of Faith. I don't think I give thought often enough to these Articles of Faith summarizing WHAT I BELIEVE. This one especially provides a great reminder to me as I teach my kids about appropriate reading, tv, media, etc.Well, anyhoo...
I was just thinking about my responsibility to be aware of what my children are watching, reading, listening to (especially as they grow up) so I can encourage them to seek virtuous, lovely, and praiseworthy things.

This is the best way to be happy and is worth striving for. We like to have a forum for discussing hard things or things the kids read or hear about so that they have some reason or frame of reference to know why we believe what we do.

More than once, one of the kids will quote some religious reason for us wanting to avoid something, and we are able to give them practical reasons, too. I think that helps them feel like they are making smart decisions for good reasons, not just blindly following us.

I don't know if that made sense, but I know what I mean!

I have learned so much from Homeschooling mothers. They have a really neat mentality about their children's education.

I am curious what children's book series this lady was talking about.

i'd like to know the books, too. Very interesting stuff Heather. I feel we have the responsibility as parents to curb what children read/watch/etc. You've sparked some thinking there girl!

As a mother of avid readers, I would like to know what books you were researching. I tend to think most books in the children's section are safe. I wish there were more resources available for the content of books! I'm starting to get more nervous as my daughter reaches young adult hood - you can never be too careful about those books.

I agree with what she said and what you said. :) There is a reason God gave children parents!
