While I was making dinner Hannah decided to do some experimental cooking.
She wanted to make a dessert ... so ... she mixed together:
- cup of milk
- spoonful of brown sugar
- chocolate chips
- york peppermint pattie
She tasted it and decided it wasn't very good. It ended up down the drain.
I commented that following established recipes gives me greater confidence that it will be yummy because someone else has tried it before. She acknowledged that was a good idea.
But I should have followed my own advice. For dinner I decided to make homemade french fries with sweet potatoes and regular potatoes.
Only ... I just made it up... the baking, the temperature, the seasonings, etc.
Dinner was horrendous. The potatoes were not good at all. The ham I warmed was roasted to death because the oven was way too hot.
Max only enjoyed the peas and blueberries.
I feel like as a mother, I really ought to take my own advice more often. ...
like when i tell my kids:
- rooms need to be cleaned before you play.
- be a happy helper.
- be patient.
- no hollering.
ummm yeah ... i guess i'm still working on a few things myself.
For now, we'll work on sticking to recipes we trust. That's a start.
Speaking of food. I really want to make these two items I saw on Sandra Lee's cooking show.

The treats look so fun.
I LOVE your blog header!
you make me smile . . . i too am at fault. . . i have my kids make their beds every morning while mine is a crumpled mess. poor fellows get mixed message after mixed message around here.
We made candy cane cookies almost every Christmas as kids. I loved rolling the dough and twisting them together with my mom. Great idea. I should probably listen to my own advice to my children more frequently. I guarantee I will pay more attention to what I say to them today.
