Today I taught the combined YW lesson on Developing Talents. In preparation I was searching in a scrapbook for a lesson I taught in 1998 as an Academy for Girls Counselor. Hannah and Abe mostly wanted to see all the pictures, but Hannah asked if I was looking for something about talents. Then she said, "I have talents." And then told me that her 2 talents were eating healthy foods and exercising. She elaborated somewhat on the video (aren't kids always more silly when they know a video camera is on them??!!). But I love that kids recognize and acknowledge the good things about themselves. That seems a lesson that is harder for us adults. We asked Abe what his talents were - what he was good at. He said, "Go to church." I suppose they think outside-the-box and recognize good things that they as little ones can do. (and special thanks to Jimmy whose talent is picking up the pieces after me. I remembered at 8 a.m. that I was teaching the lesson so he got the kids ready and made the crock-pot chili for dinner after church).
Here are some quotes that I liked about developing talents and being confident in yourself as a child of God:
“No one else can do what the Lord sent you to mortality to do. The value of what you have to contribute will come through the expression of your own personality, that particular spark of the divine that makes you unique, setting you off from every other living creature. The mark you leave on the world, on the hearts and minds of others is as distinct as your thumbprint.” (I think I found this years ago in the New Era)
“Our Father in Heaven needs you. Everyone has a special assignment. No one else has your talent; no one else will be in your place at this time. Our Father in heaven has given you a special touch, so you can succeed. So think, “What is your special talent? What is your touch?” It may be many things, and maybe you want to develop more. Maybe you want to give love and understanding, or maybe you want to be a peacemaker. Maybe you can lighten the load of those with whom you travel along life’s road. Whatever it is, you do have a special calling and a special touch. Think about it, and then go out and use it.” Norma Ashton - wife of Elder Marvin J. Ashton

Wonderful kids, wonderful talents! And great quotes to save, learn and remember. I think I would love your lessons, Heath!
I totally need to remember what a great resource you would be for me when teaching! I am going to have to look at what is coming up and pick your brain! I taught this lesson a couple of weeks ago.
Darling videos!
Heather, Thank you for those quotes. And I love your play list. I'm so emotional today and I just sit here listening and crying (these darn hormones.) :) I love you! Thank you.
My favorite is Hannah's talent to "have time alone"... I WANT THAT TALENT! Too funny. I wonder where she learned that from? hee, hee.
I love your kids Heather! Hannah says the funniest things. What a good thing to think about the talents we do have instead of the ones we wished we had. Cool that Jimmy has the talent of making chili too. That must come in handy!
I met a lady once at my work that said, " I don't think many people have any talents." I felt so sad. I wish I would have had those wonderful quotes to share with her Heather. I also loved your post about disappointments. It was awesome.
sounds like you're an awesome teacher. I, too, need to be thankful for the teaching I do becuase I probably learn the most. I love that Hannah uses "Time alone" as a talent.
