August (a wise Southern black beekeeper) lives with her two sisters in a Pepto-Bismol colored house. The house is that color because August’s sister May chose it (since it made her happy), and rather than fight the choice, August says to Lily (the book’s main character):
“You know, some things don’t matter that much, Lily. Like the color of a house. How big is that in the overall scheme of life? But lifting a person’s heart - now that matters. The whole problem with people is … they know what matters, but they don’t choose it… . The hardest thing on earth is choosing what matters.”

The color of Pepto-Bismal
I saw on a friend's blog this quote from the book 'The Secret Life of Bees'. Though it doesn't look like a book that I'd ever read, I loved this excerpt.

I LOVED this book! August was such a great character and I can just picture her Pepto pink house. And that quote is a great one and a great reminder, especially for me with my kids.
I have been curious about this book and have it reserved at the library and I think I'm number 2 on the list now so I can read it soon. Interesting that everyone knows what Pepto-Bismol pink is...
