Celebrating Summer?

I've been thinking about summertime here in Memphis and trying to find something good about it. 90 degrees with 47% humidity today is just a bit too intense for me. I almost think I'd prefer Phoenix's 110 dry heat...amazingly enough. But running errands with kiddos in any temperature wears everyone out - period.

Last night we took the kids to watch Jimmy play basketball at a friend's house (they have a really cool full-size outdoor court.) They also live by a forest and we could see fireflies through the trees. It was the first time Hannah has seen them. So that was a cool thing about summer - FIREFLIES! And the other day when Hannah ran out to play on the swingset she was frightened by the noise coming from the forest. She ran back to the house and asked about it. I told her it was Cicadas singing and they all start singing together so it gets loud. She said, "well, they don't sing very pretty." So even though we don't really love the pulsing song of the cicada, it has become a new summertime sound here in the South. But we are trying to enjoy popsicles, watermelon, grilling outside, ice water, and water activities so we'll forget about the sweating, the bugs, and the heat.

I'd rather take hot and dry over hot and wet ANY DAY! But that's my opinion, as an Arizonian...

The cicadas don't sing very pretty! That is so true. But fireflies are really cool. We experienced both for the first time in Chicago. And Owen would agree with WATERMELON! It's his favorite summer thing (well, and water games and swimming!).
